While dating seems to be a very general thing that would give the same experience regardless of what age you are, this is actually not true at all. There are many differences in how dating is perceived and carried out by teens and adults, and we’ll discuss them in this article.
Expectations
Adults tend to have more realistic expectations when they date, including how much time is available to spend with the other person and what they can and cannot ask from the other person. This is due to the experience that they have had and the maturity that they have gotten over the years. Teens are just starting to learn about the opposite sex and romance, and might get carried away in what to expect from the other party involved.
Limitations
Adult dating tends not to have many limitations, as adults earn their own money, have the freedom to do as they wish, and have schedules that are somewhat more flexible. Teens on the other hand don’t have it as good as they are usually still financially dependent on their parents, have curfews and have to work dating around school, chores and family obligations. This can make dating a more stressful affair for teens. Not only that, some parents do not allow their teens to date.
Identity and Change
While change is inevitable for everyone, adult daters may find their experiences more stable as they have matured and found their identity over the years. Teens are still searching for their true identity, and may switch back and forth between characters and temperaments to experiment. This may not go down well with the person whom the teen is dating, which may explain why teen dating experiences typically do not last long.
The things listed above are just some of the many differences in adult dating and teen dating. Overall, teen relationships are less stable and more likely to fall apart, due to the uncertain nature of teens themselves and their dependency on adults to provide their needs.
